“Its main peak, rising like a pyramid above its adjacent peaks, towers straight up into the sky.”

“Capturing the extraordinary panorama of such spectacular scenery in words proves to be quite challenging.”

On Moxi Mountain in Yulongxi, when American botanist and explorer Joseph Rock got his first glimpse of the majestic main peak of Gongga Mountain, he was profoundly astonished and penned the aforementioned words in his diary.

Gongga Mountain is known as the “King of Sichuan’s Mountains”. The character ‘gong’ in Gongga Mountain means ‘tall’ in Tibetan, and ‘ga’ represents ‘pure white’. Therefore, some people translate its significance vividly as ‘supreme, lily, and flawless’.

Earning the reputation of being ‘half in fairyland and half on earth’, this locale has the breathtaking scenery of ‘experiencing four seasons in one day and one place’.

The Gongga Mountain area boasts a distinct altitudinal zonation with a rich variety of vegetation, such as Kangding rhododendron, Kangding magnolia, broad-leaved forest, coniferous forest, and birch forest. Golden monkeys, takins, snow leopards, and Chinese monals inhabit the snow mountains and colorful forests here, making this place the paradise of all living beings.

On October 12, 2021, at the 15thmeeting of theConference of the Partiesto the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, China officially designated its first group of national parks. This includes Sanjiangyuan National Park, Giant Panda National Park, Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, and Wuyi Mountain National Park.

Up to now,the country has outlined plans for three national parks in Sichuan Province. The first to be established was the Giant Panda National Park. The Ruoergai National Park was approved to be established. Additionally, the Gongga Mountain National Parkhas been included in the spatial layout scheme of national parks.

As the ‘youngest’ national park in Sichuan today, the vitality showcased by the Gongga Mountain area attracts outdoor enthusiasts, mountaineers, zoologists, and botanists from all over the world. Through multiple visits to Gongga Mountain, they search for their own discoveries.

During the two sessions in China, ecological and environmental protection once again emerged as a prominent topic of discussion.

Sichuan International Communication Center and Wuliangye Group are set to launch bilingual documentaries titled “Exploring National Parks: Our Fairylands”. Tracing the footsteps of renowned bloggers, overseas climbers, travel writers, and photographers, we will delve deep into the Ruoergai National Park, the Gongga Mountain National Park, and the Giant Panda National Park. Through their perspectives, China’s rich and magnificent landscapes, along with its diverse flora and fauna resources, are able to be appreciated, recorded, and narrated, thus showcasing the story of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

The second episode, titled “Over the Hills”, from the series “Our Fairylands”, features American mountaineer Jon Otto. Otto, nominated for the 2012 Golden Ice Axe Award and pioneered the traditional routes of Banji Peak and Chola Shan, embarks on another journey to Gongga Mountain. Through a hiking trip, he narrates his stories about mountains, humanity, and nature, exploring the ‘growth code’ of Gongga Mountain National Park.
